There’s no denying that a regular exercise routine does the body good — from improving blood circulation to its positive effects to your psychological well-being. Here at our Los Angeles nonsurgical cosmetic practice, one of the most common questions that our patients asked is whether or not facial exercises work. Can it lift facial muscles like how regular exercise tone certain body parts?

The Jury Is Still Out on the Efficacy of Facial Exercises

According to the findings of a recently published study in the January issue of Aesthetic Surgery Journal, it looks like the jury is still out on whether or not facial exercises can significantly contribute to making one appear younger.

A group of researchers based in Belgium reviewed 9 studies which looked into the effects of facial exercise to facial rejuvenation. Although all the findings of the study reported a positive correlation between facial exercise and rejuvenation, the researchers found out that is no sufficient available evidence determining the efficacy of facial exercise.

“The existing published studies were not randomized or controlled. Most lacked blinding and only used subjective measures to assess the effectiveness of treatment. We need better studies before we can draw any conclusions about the usefulness of facial exercises,” said lead researcher John Van Borsel, PhD, Professor of Neurolinguistics and Logopedics at Ghent University, Ghent, Belgium, and Veiga de Almeida University, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The researchers further noted that there is a need for well-designed (randomized and controlled) studies in the future to determine the efficacy of facial exercises.
